The Hollywood Reporter: The Beauty And Grace Of ‘Keep On Keepin’ On

Writer David Rooney Gives The Documentary A Powerful Review

There’s that old saying: you don’t choose your family, but you do get to choose your friends. But is that really true? Sometimes, the choice of the people you connect with – who slot perfectly into your life – seems out of your hands.

That certainly appears to be the case for the friendship at the heart of Al Hicks’ acclaimed documentary, Keep On Keepin’ On. Charting an unlikely connection between jazz legend Clark Terry, and then relatively fresh talent Justin Kauflin, the film has a sense of destiny to it – these are two men who, one way or the other, were meant to meet.

The film, which picked up major awards at the Tribeca Film Festival, earned a rave review by David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter. Rooney highlights the unlikely nature of Kauflin and Terry’s friendship, noting the film’s “warmth, generosity, and immediacy” and noting its capacity for quiet resilience.
